Wednesday, the Israeli Occupation Prison Service Parole Committee refused to consider the request for an early release of the prisoner Walid Daqqa (62).

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said the refusal to consider the request and referring him to a special committee is 'equivalent to a decision to kill him,' considering his critical health condition.

Daqqa was detained on March 25, 1986 and given a life sentence, which was later set at 37 years.

The sentence was supposed to end in March, 2023, however, in 2018, two more years were added to his sentence after he was charged with attempting to bring mobile phones.

During a session for the Parole Committee held in Ramla prison, the committee claimed that considering the request for the early release of Daqqa is not within its powers, and therefore referred the decision to another committee responsible for prisoners' life sentences.

Daqqa’s family and the campaign to release him considered this decision a 'death sentence' due to the health complications he is suffering from.

Notably, he suffers from health complications following a surgical operation and part of his right lung was removed.

In December 2022, he was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a rare cancer that affects the bone marrow.
