Saturday, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (Turkish: Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı, also known as AFAD) announced that 33,077 aftershocks were recorded following the deadly earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş in on Feb. 6.
AFAD explained that the aftershocks occurred between Feb. 6 and May 6, noting that it monitors seismic activity in and around Turkey around the clock.
On Feb. 6, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks, leaving thousands dead, injured and displaced, as well as massive destruction in both countries.
