Arab foreign ministers will discuss, in a meeting soon, the file of Syria's return to the Arab League as they prepare for the Arab summit scheduled in Riyadh on May 19, according to a diplomatic source in Amman.

The source added that the majority of countries are expected to agree on restoring Syria's seat, 12 years its membership in the Council of the League of Arab States was frozen.

Under the amended League charter, decisions can be passed by a "two-thirds majority" at a second meeting, if no consensus is reached at the first meeting.

Most Arab countries support the return of Syria to the Arab League, and the restoration of relations with the country emerging from a bloody 12-year war.

Jordan led many diplomatic efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis politically, in coordination with other Arab countries.

The latest of which was a meeting held on Monday, in which Jordan hosted the foreign ministers of Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

The ministers agreed on supporting the Syrian regime to extend its control over its country, impose the rule of law and end the spread of armed and terrorist groups on its lands.

They also agreed to reject foreign interference in Syrian internal affairs, to formulate a strategy that allows for a political solution and to pave the way for the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees.

The day after the Amman meeting, Jordan began conducting its efforts to reach a political solution.

Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, called his Kuwaiti counterpart, who also received a similar call from the Saudi Foreign Minister.

Kuwait and Lebanon announced their support for the results of the Amman meeting.

More diplomatic efforts are expected to continue before the next meeting of foreign ministers scheduled to take place in a few days. The United States, Russia, China and the European Union countries are expected to engage in conducting the efforts as well.
