Russian President Vladimir Putin said he will deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus saying that "there is nothing unusual here either: the United States has been doing this for decades," according to AFP.

Russia started training crews on April 3 and plans to finish the construction of a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons by July 1.

Putin has previously said nuclear tensions were "rising" globally but that Moscow would not deploy first.

"Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko has long been raising the question of the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus," he said.

Putin added that "there is nothing unusual here either: the United States has been doing this for decades. They have long placed their tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of their allies, NATO countries, in Europe."

"We agreed that we will do the same - without violating our obligations, I emphasize, without violating our international obligations on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons," he added.
