Two childhood sweethearts in the United Kingdom finally got married 60 years after parents prevented the marriage while they were young.

Len Allbrighton, 79, and Jeanette Steer, 78, met in 1963 as they were both training as nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital in the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.

Merely a few months after meeting, Len had asked for Jeanette’s hand in marriage but her parents put the wedding on hold as she was still 18 years old when the age of consent was 21.

Len decided to move to Australia for work and buy a land to build the both of them a house. However, Jeanette’s parents refused to let their daughter move to Australia so the wedding was called off.

She ended up marrying someone on the Isle of Wight and he married someone in Australia.

Fifty-two years later, Len got divorced and decided to find his long-lost love once again. He traveled back to the Isle of Wight and decided to pay Jeanette a visit after finding her address.

“I went on the off chance,” Len said. “It was not an easy place to find but I did.”

He added: “I just hoped she was OK — I didn’t expect anything else. I’m very surprised by the outcome of my trip down there and very happy too!”

She found him standing outside her garden fence and was surprised when he told her who he was. She turned him away and told her husband he was just a stranger looking for directions.

Two years later, Jeanette’s husband died of cancer and she reconnected with Len who had sent her a Christmas card the year before so she had his contact information.

“I was glad he looked me up,” Jeanette said. “I thought of him a lot at the time.”

Len then invited her to live with him in Stevenage, a town in England, and he proposed to her last year.

They had their wedding five years to the day that Jeanette had moved in with Len on Feb. 11. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended the ceremony.

“We fell in love again,” Len gushed. “We read poems to each other and exchanged rings — I got emotional when reading mine. I was overwhelmed with my love for her.”

“Married life is fantastic — it couldn’t be better,” Jeanette said.

“It’s nice to have someone who treats me with respect. I like doing everything and anything with Len.”
