The Public Prosecutor of East Amman detained an unlicensed owner of a domestic worker recruitment agency for 15 days, subject to renewal, pending investigations.

He was charged with human trafficking, based on Article 3 of the relevant law.

According to a source close to the investigation, five domestic workers were beaten, tortured and threatened by the unlicensed agency owner.

He got them to "sneak out of their employers' homes" in order to work for him.

One of the domestic workers, who is from Bangladesh, was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecutor in East Amman for involvement in a human trafficking case, which led them to arrest the unlicensed agency owner, the source said.

The source told Roya that a complaint was submitted against a Jordanian and one other individual who worked together to recruit workers from East Asia as domestic workers in Jordan, but that was not the case.

The source explained that the workers were subjected to fraud, deception and exploitation.

The unlicensed agency owner had them work on a daily basis for which he got JD 30 but only gave them JD 5, saying he provided them with housing, the source added.
