A total of 68 cases of scabies were recorded in Jordan last week.

According to the Director of the Epidemiology Department at the Ministry of Health Ayman Magableh said the cases included 47 cases in the southern Jordan Valley and 21 others in Aqaba.

Scabies is considered to be an "endemic" in Jordan, he said.

He added that there has been a slight increase in the number of reported cases.

Magableh explained that scabies is a parasite that is active at night but is not visible to the naked eye.

He stressed that the disease is not transmitted from animals to humans and cannot survive outside the human body for more than two days

Scabies does not require hospitalization and treatment is available in all hospitals and health centers across the Kingdom.

It is transmitted through long periods of direct skin to skin contact with infected people, in addition to sharing personal care tools with someone who has Scabies.

Notably, scabies usually infects the elderly, children and people with immune diseases.
