Moroccan football player Achraf Hakimi firmly denied rape allegations that he is currently facing in France. Paris St-Germain also showed strong support for their player.
The football club issued a statement saying: “The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system.”
“Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch,” the statement stressed.
A 24-year-old woman claimed that Hakimi raped her at his home in Paris on Feb. 25.
A source close to the investigation said the woman did not file any charges against Hakimi and only reported the incident at a police station on Sunday.
According to CNN, the public prosecutor's office handling the case declined to comment but did confirm that an investigation had begun.
Hakimi made history during Qatar World Cup 2023 when Morocco made it to the semi-finals, becoming the first Arab and African country to do so.
Many social media users called the allegations a part of a smear campaign directed at Moroccans in France after the Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred was found guilty of raping a woman back in 2016.
