A total of 1,937 women and girls sought refuge in shelters and safehouses for safety during 2022 in Jordan, according to data issued by the Ministry of Social Development.

The ministry noted that it has six established homes to provide protection for females in need.

The media spokesperson at the ministry Ashraf Khreis said that "family reconciliation houses" have specific goals and specialties, all of which aim to protect and care for women exposed to domestic violence based in Amman, Irbid and Aqaba.

He said that the family reconciliation house in Amman catered to 1,039 beneficiaries, the one in Irbid catered to 441 beneficiaries and the one in Aqaba catered to 43 beneficiaries.

He added that the safehouse for girls in Rusaifa received 152 girls.

Dar Amneh for women and girls at risk, which specializes in sheltering women whose lives are at risk, received 128 females.

Dar Karama, which specializes in caring for victims of human trafficking, received 109 females as well as 25 males.

Khreis said that domestic violence cases fall under the responsibilities of the Family Protection Department, noting that the department has 19 social development offices that received 11,617 cases in 2022.

Article 3 of the instructions for shelters for vulnerable women and its amendments for the year 2018 stipulates that “any woman is considered at risk if her life is threatened with death by a member of her family, and there is no person capable of protecting her."
