Chilean swimmer Barbara Hernandez set a world record for being the first person to swim 2.5 km in Antarctic Ocean waters, Saturday.

After breaking the record she said, "It was a super difficult swim, tough, because it is a very long swim and after completing the first mile I felt that I would never reach the buoy, and I was very focused on technique, on kicking, obviously I feel my arms more and more heavy because the blood begins to crowd, what the body does is that the blood stops circulating to the hands and feet."

"Our swim, which is going to be Guinness (World Record, ed.), which are these two and a half kilometers in Antarctica, is a historic milestone because no one has ever swam that distance at that temperature, in that place, and clearly it cannot be a competition because people will die with hypothermia at 27 degrees which is what I came out with."

She spoke about her ultimate and bigger goal saying, "We can finally talk about Antarctica, talk about what each of us can do to protect the oceans, the living waters."
