King Charles III praised people's "goodness and compassion" in his first Christmas message since his accession to the throne, saying "we see it in our health and social care professionals, our teachers, and indeed all those working in public service."

The King's message came in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and a wave of public sector industrial action.

The 74-year-old sovereign spoke from St. George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle, where his mother Elizabeth II, who ruled for more than seven decades before passing away on Sept. 8 at the age of 96, and his father Prince Philip are buried.
