The hashtag ‘Mutah Professor of Medicine’ topped the list of trending hashtags on Twitter in Jordan on Thursday.

Social media users expressed their frustration with the incident in which a professor of medicine at Jordan’s Mutah University called out a student who took medical leave to receive treatment as he suffers from a psychological disorder.

During the professor’s class, he noticed that the student was absent. According to students who were in the class, the professor asked in front of everyone, “Where is the guy with the psychological disorder? Where is the guy who has a psychological evaluation?"

Social media users called on concerned authorities to hold the professor accountable.

A social media user wrote on Twitter, “I wish this student sees the tweets and knows that he is not alone and that all the students are standing with you.”

“Your emotions are valid. Your mental health matters,” the same user continued.

Another user wrote, “I am very happy that this generation is finally taking actions that we were not able to take.”

For his part, the President of Mutah University Arafat Awajan said that he formed a committee to investigate the incident.

Awajan told Roya that the university is keen to reveal the facts of the incident.

He added that social networking sites attacked the university professor as a result of what they described as "bullying."

Arafat called on students and Jordanians not to believe everything circulated on social media, warning against insulting the university or its students and professors by publishing incorrect news, which would expose its owner to legal accountability.
