Thursday, US President Joe Biden launched a fierce assault on Donald Trump and the former leader's supporters, branding them a threat to democracy and the "very foundations of our republic," reported AFP.

"Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic," Biden, referring to Trump's "Make America Great Again" motto, said in a prime-time address to the nation.

"Equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise."
