Two children in the United States were diagnosed with monkeypox, making them the first children in the country to be diagnosed with the disease, said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC said in a statement, that the two infections are in no way related to one another and were likely infected as a result of household transmission. However, the health authorities are currently investigating how the children were infected.

The first case belongs to an infant who is not a US resident and the second one is a toddler who is a resident of California.

The statement added that both children are experiencing symptoms but are in good condition and receiving treatment.

Notably, on Saturday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is scheduled to announce if the organization should launch the highest level of readiness, to combat the spread of monkeypox.
