Acting Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in and said he is committed to safeguarding the country’s democracy, but won’t stand for so-called “acts of sabotage”. He made a pre-recorded address calling for all parties involved to join hands and leave aside their differences in order to help the buckling country recover.

The acting president said, "As per the Constitution next week the parliament will convene and take steps to select a new President. Within that brief period, I have been temporarily conferred with the responsibilities of the acting President. Within this brief period, I expect to take several urgent measures. The people of this country expect a change in the political system."

"Immediate steps will also be taken to protect the law and order of the country. I 100% acknowledge the right to peacefully protest. But some groups have been attempting to engage in acts of sabotage. There have also been reports that some other groups may make attempts to pressure parliamentarians in the process of selecting a new president," he added.

"We will create the necessary environment for the MPs to make independent decisions. They will be provided maximum security. We will not allow any group to destroy democracy in parliament at any point."

"We remain committed and join hands with them to safeguard law and order. We remain committed to safeguarding democracy. I remain committed to safeguarding the Constitution of Sri Lanka. I will not at any point allow any or encourage act that violates the Constitution. I will also not act in violation of the Constitution," Wickremesinghe said.

"If law and order in the country collapses, it will impact the country’s economy. Fuel, electricity and water supply as well as food supply can be severely disrupted."

He said, "We should join hands on behalf of the country and leave aside the political differences and opinions. So please abandon your personal agendas and prioritize the needs of the country. Think about safeguarding the country as opposed to saving individuals."
