Palestinian Justice Minister, Muhammad Al-Shalaldeh, said that the United States gave back the bullet that assassinated Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to the Palestinian Authority.

Palestinian Authority is currently awaiting the results of the criminal investigations conducted inside the American embassy to be announced.

This came after on Saturday Palestinians had agreed to hand over the bullet that killed Shireen Abu Akleh to US authorities for examination.

Shalaldeh added that after the US gave the bullet back, no changes were found from a technical point of view.

Shalaldeh said in press statements, “I think that an independent investigation should be conducted so that we understand exactly what happened, who is responsible and why.”

He added, “We can talk about the consequences once we know this, but I think there should be an objective investigation, and I am happy that the United States can help play a role in that."

Last month, the United Nations said that information it had gathered revealed that the bullets that killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh were fired by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva, “All information we have gathered … is consistent with the finding that the shots that killed Abu Akleh and injured her colleague Ali Sammoudi came from Israeli security forces and not from indiscriminate firing by armed Palestinians.”

She added that the information the OHCHR had gathered had revealed no “activity by armed Palestinians in the immediate vicinity of the journalists.”
