At least one person was killed and seven others were injured in a bomb attack on a mosque in northeastern Afghanistan during Friday prayers, local police said.

Kunduz police spokesman Qari Obaidullah Obeidi told AFP that the explosion occurred in a mosque in the Imam Sahib area, killing one of the worshipers and wounding seven others.

The region witnessed a similar attack on April 22, targeting a mosque frequented by Sufis during Friday prayers, killing at least 36 people.

Obeidi added that "the explosives were planted inside the mosque, and the explosion occurred while the worshipers were performing Friday prayers."

A medical source at the state hospital confirmed the outcome of the attack, which no party has yet claimed.

The number of attacks in the country has decreased since the Taliban took power in August 2021, but the country witnessed in late April during the month of Ramadan and at the end of May a series of bloody attacks that killed dozens of people.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.

The Taliban is trying to reduce the threat of ISIS-K, and periodically targets operatives and cells of the group it has been fighting for years.

The Taliban escalated their campaign against the organization, especially in the eastern province of Nangarhar, and arrested hundreds of suspects of belonging to it.

The Taliban have asserted for months that they defeated Daesh, but analysts believe that the extremist group remains the main security challenge to the new Afghan authority.
