Saturday, social media witnessed a wave of uproar after images surfaced of vandalized pillars in the ancient city of Jerash.

Someone had used black spray paint to write over a few pillars, an act of which many called a “disgrace and offense to tourism in Jordan,” especially at a time when the country is seeking to attract more tourists.

Jerash is the second most visited tourist destination in Jordan, right after Petra.

The ancient city is characterized by the succession of civilizations it witnessed for over 6,500 years.

The city experienced its golden age under the rule of the Romans, and this site is known to be one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world.
