A video went viral on social media showing a father trying to throw his 12-year-old daughter from the balcony of their apartment in Egypt.

The video, which is almost a minute long, shows the father holding his daughter's arm and hanging her outside the balcony before two men come into frame from inside the house to intervene and save the girl.

The video was met with widespread criticism, backlash and a general feeling of resentment in Egypt with many calling the authorities to learn more about the issue.

The authorities opened an investigation on Tuesday to decide on the appropriate legal measures, according to reports.

It was also circulated that the father had done such an action in an effort to ‘discipline’ the girl because she had ‘refused to prepare food.’
