A video went viral on social media that showed the Egyptian athlete, Ali Farag, who ranked second in the world in squash, saying that Palestine did not get the attention Ukraine got because it “doesn’t fit the narrative of the media of the West.”

After being crowned with the title of winning the Optasia Championships 2022, Farag took advantage of his speech to highlight the oppression of Palestine from the Israeli occupation that has lasted for 74 years.

“We’ve all seen what’s going on in the world with Ukraine at the moment and nobody's happy and nobody should ever accept any killings or any oppression.”

He said: "What I will say will get me in trouble,” adding that “We’ve never been allowed to talk about politics in sports but all of a sudden now it’s allowed.”

“I hope now people will look at the oppression everywhere. I mean Palestinians have been going through that for the past 74 years, but I guess because it doesn't fit the narrative of the media of the West we couldn’t talk about it.”

He added, “But now that we can talk about Ukraine, we can talk about palestine. So please keep that in mind. Thank you.”
