French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday the war in Ukraine would disrupt food supply chains in Europe and Africa.

"We must re-evaluate our production strategies to defend our food sovereignty as Europeans, and also re-evaluate the strategy towards Africa, otherwise many countries in Africa will be affected in the next 12 to 18 months," Macron added.

He warned that the Europeans were ready to impose new "harsh sanctions" on Russia if the war in Ukraine continued.

"If things continue at the military level (...) we will impose new sanctions, including severe ones," the French president told reporters, stressing that the European Union supports Ukraine "until the end."
