The former minister and former Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court (RHC), Adnan Abu Odeh, passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 89.

Adnan Abu Odeh was one of the brightest Arab politicians who worked in the field of media. He was the Minister of Information in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for many years and a political advisor to King Hussein, who worked with him for more than twenty years.

From the city of Nablus, he was born in 1933 to a simple family, and he was the only son among his sisters. He continued his primary education in his city as well as high school, and he showed outstanding brilliance and was one of the best students. Then he completed his studies at Dar Al Mualemeen. He also studied English literature at Damascus University.

The beginning of his career, he worked as a teacher in schools in Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

In 1965, he joined the General Intelligence Department to work in the Israeli Occupation Information Department, then moved to the Political Analysis Department, which prepares reports to be submitted directly to the King.

He began to rise and his career started to rise with King Hussein during the Battle of Karama in 1968 and thereafter. When the chaos of weapons spread in Jordan in 1970, his security warnings were accurate.

The King chose him to be the Minister of Information in the military government that was formed in September 1970. The King chose him to restore security and impose the prestige of the state in the country.

After the resignation of the military government, he was reassigned to the Ministry of Information several times and in more than one government.

He was appointed as a member of the Senate for more than one term. When the National Consultative Council was formed in the late seventies, he was a member of it.

Between the years 1992-1995, he was Jordan's permanent representative to the United Nations.

Adnan Abu Odeh offered sincere advice to King Hussein, especially with regard to the Palestinian issue. In the midst of the first Palestinian Intifada and the issuance of positions demanding the highlighting of the Palestinian identity, Abu Odeh was with the opinion that Jordan should go in line with the Palestinian desire to strengthen the Palestinian identity on Palestinian land.

He wrote more than one political book, most notably Adnan Abu Odeh’s Diary which received many reviews and was described as the most important diary of an Arab politician.

He also published The Mustadrak in the Diary of Adnan Abu Odeh, in which he completed what he did not publish in the diaries regarding Palestine and the peace process.

Adnan Abu Odeh was an intellectual and political figure who faithfully served Jordanian politics and accomplished a lot for the sake of the country.
