South Korea announced Monday the first two deaths caused by the Omicron variant.

The South Korea news agency (Yonhab) said Seoul probably recorded the first two deaths due to the new COVID-19 variant, noting that the two deaths involved individuals in their nineties and the infections were confirmed after they had passed away.

Health authorities in Gwangju are still determining the exact cause of death, the agency added.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, South Korea has confirmed 642,207 cases and 5,730 deaths.
