After Friday prayers, a march took place in downtown Amman, to demand the suspension of the Defense Law and to protest the rise in prices.

The protesters called for the suspension of the Defense Law “because there is no need for it to continue at the present time.”

They also called for the need to reduce prices, including fuel prices, taking into account the difficult economic conditions that Jordanians live in.

The governor of the capital, Yaser Adwan, had confirmed in a statement to Roya that any march is prohibited as it would violate the Defense Law, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Adwan revealed that any protests or measures that violate the law will be dealt with firmly and sternly.

He also stressed that peaceful marches that do not violate the law are not prohibited at all.

The vicinity of the downtown area of the capital, Amman, witnessed a security presence.

Activists had announced the protest on social media to hold a march in downtown Amman and the Popular Movement for Change (tagheer) said, in a press statement Thursday evening, that the march will start after Friday prayers in front of the Grand Husseini Mosque.

The movement had called on all citizens to adhere to the precautionary health measures, in order to preserve public health and to minimize the number of infections.
