UPDATED: Suspected cases of poisoning in Jerash rises to 37: Director of Jerash Hospital to Roya

Tuesday afternoon, the Director of Jerash Governmental Hospital, Sadiq Al-Atoum, said that the number of suspected cases of poisoning in Jerash rose to 37 cases, up from 31 this morning.

Al-Atoum told Roya that at least five cases are currently receiving treatment at Jerash Hospital, and five others at Princess Haya Military Hospital.

He noted that the patients are in good condition but require hospital treatment.

Monday evening, 15 cases were suspected to have been poisoned.

The Director of Communicable Diseases, Ali Zitawi, said that all of the patients are under the age of 12 and suffered from the same symptoms: abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

He noted that those still hospitalized are in good condition and will be discharged in the morning.

Preliminary results indicate that the cause of the poisoning might be drinking water, as all patients drank from water bottles that originated from the same source.

As a precautionary measure, the water desalination plant was closed and samples were taken to the laboratory.

According to Zitawi, there is a possibility that the well that supplies the plant with water is contaminated.
