Friday evening at 8:00pm, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the city of Carson in California, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The depth of the quake was 14 kilometers, according to USGS.

There have been no initial reports of injuries or any significant damage, according to officials in Los Angeles County.

However, shortly following the earthquake, residents in Carson noticed flames at a refinery, and fire crews were called to the area.

A spokesperson for the Marathon Petroleum refinery, Jamal Kheiry, said the event was controlled and that it was a normal flaring operation done to burn off excess gas.

“Flares are safety devices and the flares are functioning as intended. There are no injuries or off-site impact,” Kheiry told The Times in an email.
