The Chinese government announced Thursday that it has fully vaccinated more than one billion people against COVID-19 on its soil, or more than 70 percent of the Chinese population.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Health, Mi Feng, told the press that China, the most populous country in the world (1.4 billion people), in which the virus was first discovered in late 2019, had given a total of 2.16 billion doses of vaccines as of Sept. 15.

Late last year, China began vaccinating its population with Sinopharm and Sinovac, the latter of which is registered in several countries around the world, including Jordan.

Beijing has not yet allowed foreign vaccines to be given on its soil.
