The number of Turkish soldiers killed in an attack in the Idlib region, northwest of Syria, has risen to three, according to a new toll announced by the Turkish Ministry of Defense on Saturday evening.

The ministry said one of the soldiers, who was "seriously wounded" in the attack, died on Saturday evening in Hatay Hospital in southern Turkey.

On Saturday, the ministry had reported the killing of two of its soldiers and the wounding of three in the attack.

The ministry said that an attack targeted "a unit returning from a patrol", without revealing how it happened. However, an AFP correspondent at the scene indicated that Turkish soldiers were killed and wounded in the explosion of an explosive device on the Idlib-Bennish road.

"Our comrades died in a heinous and outrageous attack," Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said, adding, "The blood shed for our martyrs has never gone unpunished."

Armed groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra), control Idlib governorate.

More than a year ago, a ceasefire was reached with government forces, under the auspices of Turkey, which supports some of the fighting factions in the region, and Russia, which supports the regime.

The truce is often violated by bombings carried out by the regime or specific attacks by the factions.
