Tuesday evening, a powerful earthquake of a magnitude of 7.1 Richter's scale hit southeast of Mexico, announced the National Center for Seismology.

One person was killed by a falling post in Coyuca de Benitez, according to Guerrero state Gov. Hector Astudillo.

The epicenter was located 14 km southeast of the coastal resort of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero, and 400 km south of the capital, Mexico, according to the Center.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), based in Honolulu, Hawaii, said there is no danger of a tsunami, according to the Associated Press.

The earthquake, which lasted for less than a minute, shook buildings throughout the capital, AFP reported.

There was no immediate information on casualties or material losses as a result of the earthquake.

“No victims or serious damage beyond some collapsed walls and falling rocks,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter before the death was reported.

“We heard loud noise from the building, noise from the windows, things fell inside the house, the power went out,” said a resident in Mexico.

“We heard leaking water, the water went out of the pool and you heard people screaming, very nervous people.”

The last major earthquake in Mexico, with a magnitude of 7.1, was on Sep. 19, 2017, when 369 people were killed.
