An image was circulated all across social media showing a jam-packed US military transport plane purportedly with hundreds of Afghans on board -- some of whom climbed onto the half-open ramp at the last minute and were allowed aboard.

The US defence and security news site Defense One obtained the picture which showed around 640 people crammed into a C-17 Globemaster III. This is the highest number of people ever carried in such an aircraft.

According to US defence officials, the passengers on the flight were safely evacuated from Kabul to Qatar Sunday.
Initially, the flight was not supposed to take such a large load of passengers, however, some panicked Afghans pulled themselves on to the C-17’s half-open ramp.

The flight was one of several flights that was able to take off with hundreds of people on board.

Monday, the desperation of Afghans was seen at Kabul airport, as many clung to the side of moving military planes and at least two people fell and died after the plane took off from Kabul.

Afghan citizens were trying to flee the country after the Taliban reached Kabul and took control of all the provinces of Afghanistan.

The Taliban were in control of Afghanistan on Monday after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and conceded the insurgents had won the 20-year war.

The astonishingly quick collapse of the government, with militants taking over the presidential palace on Sunday night, triggered fear and panic in the capital.

Thousands of people were on Monday trying to escape Kabul and the feared hardline brand of Islamic rule of the Taliban, with scenes of chaos as crowds gathered at the airport.

Ghani fled on Sunday as the insurgents encircled Kabul, with the Taliban sealing a nationwide military victory that saw all cities fall to them in just 10 days.
