Monday, Hurghada International Airport received a Russian flight from Moscow for the first time in nearly six years, following the bombing of a Russian airliner that killed all 224 people onboard in October 2015.

A source at Hurghada International Airport said that the Russian plane was carrying about 500 Russian tourists.

The source added that five flights are scheduled to arrive in Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh from Moscow weekly.

In October 2015, Russia banned all flights to Egypt following the bombing of the Russian airplane.

At the time, Russian officials insisted that security procedures at Egyptian airports were insufficient.

Russian flights to Cairo resumed in 2018, but remained banned to the resort areas of Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh.
