Japan confirms first infection with Lambda coronavirus strain

Saturday, Japan confirmed its first case of the Lambda coronavirus strain, which was first discovered in Peru.

Officials at the Japanese Ministry of Health said that the infection involved a woman in her thirties. It was discovered that she tested positive for the Lambda mutation after in a quarantine check at Haneda International Airport upon her arrival from Peru on July 20.

The woman showed no symptoms.

In an analysis by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, it was confirmed that the virus was of the Lambda variant.

The Lambda variant was first detected in Peru in August last year and has been spreading in South America, according to the institute.
