A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's far eastern region of Papua Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning or damage was reported.

The earthquake struck at a relatively small depth of 12 km (about 180 km northeast of the city of Tual).

Surface earthquakes usually cause more damage than deep ones.

Indonesia often experiences seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide.

In January, more than 100 people were killed and thousands displaced by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the island of Sulawesi.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami in Palu three years ago left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.
