Saturday, for the first time in more than seven months, Brazil recorded a daily COVID-19 death toll which amounted to less than 1,000 cases. Many attribute the milestone to a progressing vaccine campaign.

The latest reports from the Ministry of Health showed that there are 556,370 deaths and more than 19,917,855 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country of 212 million people, which is considered the second-most affected country in the world by the pandemic after the United States.

The number of deaths and cases in Brazil has decreased for several weeks, but epidemiologists fear a new rise in cases due to the Delta mutant that is spreading in several states of the country.

After a late and chaotic start due to a lack of available doses, vaccination has recently hit its full speed with more than a million injections per day since June.

In total, more than 100 million people received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 40 million people were fully immunized.

But at the beginning of the week, vaccination was suspended for several days in some major cities, due to a delay in the delivery of new doses.

A Senate panel of inquiry has been working for three months on the handling of the health crisis by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.

Specialists consider that the way the government dealt with the crisis is chaotic, especially in light of delays and suspicions of corruption in the purchase of vaccines.
