Three missiles fell on Kandahar airport during the night, officials told AFP on Sunday, at a time when fighting between Taliban and Afghan forces has been going on for several weeks in the vicinity of the city in southern Afghanistan.

"Last night, three missiles were fired at the airport, two of them hit the runway (...) and as a result all flights to and from the airport were canceled," said a civil aviation official in Kabul.

Three months ago, the Taliban launched a massive attack across Afghanistan, coinciding with the start of the final withdrawal of foreign forces from this country, which is on the verge of completion.

The movement’s elements have controlled large areas of rural areas and in recent days have begun to threaten the capitals of a number of provinces as they approached Kandahar as well as Herat, the largest city in western Afghanistan and the third largest city in numbers in this country (600,000 people), and Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province.

If Kandahar, which the Taliban made the center of their regime when they ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, falls, it will be a disaster for the Afghan authorities.
