At least 40 people were killed and 150 others were missing in northern Afghanistan after flash floods ravaged an area northeast of the capital Kabul, according to officials Thursday.

A rescue operation is underway to find the missing people after torrential rains overwhelmed Kamdesh district in Nuristan province, which is about 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Kabul.

This is a developing story.
