India recorded the first human death due to bird flu, as the authorities announced the death of an 11-year-old child due to infection with H5N1 avian flu strain.

This became the first death of its kind in the country, which highlights potential dangers to the second most populous country in the world, which is still facing difficulties in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a government statement, the child was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi July 2, and died Tuesday after his condition deteriorated and his organs began to fail.

The statement added that the paramedics who participated in the treatment of the child and his family are isolated, and the authorities have started an operation to trace contacts.

No suspected cases of bird flu have been found by the competent authorities in the boy’s hometown of Haryana. However, monitoring efforts have been bolstered, with the concerned teams remaining vigilant.

India has witnessed more than six outbreaks of bird flu over the past two decades, and managed to control them all, and no human infection with the disease had been previously reported.
