The Saudi Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that an accidental explosion took place near the city of al-Kharj, southeast of the capital Riyadh.

The ministry's spokesperson, Turki al-Malki, said the blast went off in a square outside the city, used for the collection and disposal of ammunitions that are no longer suitable for use.

"No injures were reported," he added.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion have been launched.
