Death toll in China hotel collapse rises to 17

Nine more people have been confirmed dead after a hotel collapsed in eastern China’s Suzhou city on Monday, bringing the final death toll to 17, state media reported Wednesday.

After 36 hours of search operations, rescue workers were able to find 23 people buried in the rubble, six of whom were found alive.

An initial investigation found the collapse was caused by the owner altering the structure of the building, according to the Global Times Newspaper.

Following the inicident, an unspecified number of people linked to the hotel had been detained.

Investigations are still underway.
