Saturday, Afghanistan's Health Minister Wahid Majroh said the deadly fungal infection 'black fungus,' which was initially discovered in COVID-19 patients infected with the Indian mutated strain, has been detected in Afghanistan.

This came as Afghanistan is going through a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Afghanistan reported one death due to black fungus, which has been detected in two other COVID-19 patients so far, said Majroh.

According to Alarabiya, people rarely wear face masks or abide by social distancing guidelines in Afghanistan.

Notably, the country recorded 1,272 new COVID-19 cases and 92 deaths over the past 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, Afghanistan has officially recorded 124,757 coronavirus cases and 5,199 deaths.

However, figures are believed to be extremely underreported.
