Wednesday, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Americans will soon be able to select their gender of choice when applying for passports, without any medical certification or proof.

The decision will allow all passport applicants to select their gender as 'M' or 'F', and they will not require a doctor's note if the selected gender does not match other government-issued identification forms, such as citizenship papers or drivers licenses.

Blinken also announced that his team is working on adding options for non-binary, intersex or gender-non-conforming Americans who are applying for passports.

He emphasized that this will be a slow process, calling it "technologically complex."

"The Department is taking these steps after considerable consultation with like-minded governments who have undertaken similar changes," he said.
