An investigation is underway into a possible attack Sunday by a drone on an air base in northern India, which, if confirmed, would  raise concerns about the vulnerability of India's military facilities.

"Two low-intensity explosions were reported early Sunday in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Base (in the disputed Kashmir region with Pakistan), one of which caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other occurred in an open space," the Indian Air Force said in a tweet.

It pointed out that "the equipment was not damaged, and the investigation is underway."

Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Dilbagh Singh, for his part, said in a statement that "a drone equipped with an improvised explosive device" was suspected to have been used to "drop an explosive object".

He described this incident as a "terrorist attack" in an interview with the "BTI" news agency, without referring to the suspect.

The Indian Express reported that two people had so far been arrested in connection with the case and that two people had sustained minor injuries at the base.

An official source told AFP that investigators from the Counter-Terrorism Service visited Jammu.

Retired General Des Hoda, who was leading operations in the northern sector until 2016, noted that Indian radars can detect large unmanned aircraft and vehicles, but this is not the case for drones.

The Kashmir region has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. Since then, the two countries have fought three wars, including two over the dispute over it.

In 2003, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire between the two sides of the Line of Control in the Himalayas, which prevented the outbreak of an all-out war between the two neighboring countries.

The two countries claim sovereignty over large swathes of the Himalayas, where India is grappling with an insurgency that has killed thousands of people since 1989.
