Indonesia recorded a new record number of daily infections with the coronavirus Sunday, with more than 21,000 cases announced at a time when hospitals are filling with patients in Jakarta and other Covid hotspots in the Southeast Asian country.

The toll brings the total number of cases in Indonesia to more than 2.1 million, with 57,138 deaths.

However, the actual number is likely to be much higher given the low rates of testing.

Infections have increased in recent weeks after millions traveled after the end of Ramadan in May, and as mutated versions of the virus continue to spread.

“We expected the number of infections to increase,” said Nadia Tarmzy, a spokeswoman for the team tasked with containing COVID19, noting that infections are expected to reach their peak within two to three weeks.

Fears are growing that the already fragile Indonesian health system may collapse, while there have been reports of hospitals under pressure refusing to receive more patients.

Hospitals in the capital, Jakarta, and Central and West Java were filled with patients, including those infected with the highly contagious Delta mutant that was first detected in India.

The Indonesian government, widely accused of responding inappropriately to the pandemic, has moved to tighten restrictions but has so far avoided imposing strict lockdown measures similar to those applied in other countries.

The authorities are seeking to vaccinate more than 180 million of its population of 270 million by the beginning of next year, but only about five percent of the population has so far received both doses.

Saturday, the government announced that it had achieved its goal of vaccinating more than one million people in one day.
