The chief epidemiologist in China, Zhong Nanshan, confirmed Saturday that all Chinese vaccines are effective against the mutated Delta coronavirus strain, while emphasizing the necessity of vaccinations.

Zhong said the resurgence of the pandemic in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, was the first time that China had to deal with the spread of the mutant in local communities.

This mutant, first identified in India, has a shorter incubation period and those infected with it take longer to recover.

He pointed out that 153 cases of the virus have been reported in Guangzhou since May, but no new local cases were reported between June 19 to 24.

Zhong added that more individuals need to be vaccinated to achieve "herd immunity," noting that as of Thursday, more than 1.1 billion doses of vaccines had been administered on the Chinese mainland.

In Jordan, the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine is currently in use by the health authorities as a part of the Kingdom's national vaccination campaign to immunize the population against the coronavirus.
