Canada continues to come to terms with its historical relationship with the Catholic Church as another grim discovery was made.

A Canadian First Nation, which is a group of indigenous people in Canada, discovered 751 unmarked graves found in Saskatchewan, near the site of a former residential Catholic school.

The graves are thought to be those of indigenous children who attended the school.

From the year 1899 until the late 90s, the Catholic Church operated residential schools across the country, at the behest of the government.

It formed part of an overall effort to assimilate indigenous children into the Christian or 'Canadian' way of life.

However, reports now show that abuse was rife in such schools, with many indigenous children forcibly taken from their families and placed in Catholic establishments.

In May, another mass grave was discovered in British Columbia, containing the remains of 215 indigenous children.

The burial site was also on the grounds of a former school.

Over a decade ago, the Canadian government set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate these schools.

In 2008, the commission concluded that the situation "can best be described as cultural genocide."
