The Najaf Health Department in Iraq Saturday announced the death of a citizen due to black fungus.

The Najaf Health Department issued a statement saying the citizen who died from black fungus was 56 and was admitted into the Najaf Center for Neurosciences for treatment for a stroke.

They said he had additional sinus and eye infections, but was not infected with the coronavirus.

The man suffered from diabetes, which is one of the causes of black fungus, added the department.

"We would like to point out here that another patient, aged 55, was infected with the coronavirus and was infected with the black fungus, but, thank God, she has made a full recovery," they said.

They assured their citizens that the black fungus is non-transmissible, and that the groups at risk of infection are those who frequently use cortisone, steroid and antibiotic medicines in general, those with weak immunity and those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, and it occurs as a result of exposure to a type of mold found in soil and decaying plants and fruits, which affects the sinuses, lungs and brain.
