JUST IN: Novavax says vaccine more than 90 percent effective against coronavirus

The American company Novavax said Monday that its coronavirus vaccine is more than 90 percent effective, including against mutants.

The third phase of the Novavax clinical trial included roughly 30,000 people across North America.

“These data show consistent, high levels of efficacy and reaffirm the ability of the vaccine to prevent COVID-19 amid ongoing genetic evolution of the virus," said Novavax's chief of development, Dr. Gregory Glenn.

The company added in a statement that the vaccine "showed 100 percent protection against moderate and severe diseases and 90.4 percent in total," noting that "the study included 29,960 participants in 119 locations in the United States and Mexico to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and immunity of the vaccine."

The company plans to submit the data for FDA approvals in the third quarter of 2021.
