Egypt's public prosecutor Tuesday ordered the release of a group of young men accused of raping a woman in a luxury Cairo hotel in 2014.

The case of the assault, which occurred at the five-star Fairmont Hotel in Cairo, involves a group of young men from wealthy families who are said to have drugged and raped a young woman, according to a testimony received on social media accounts and investigated by the prosecution.

The Public Prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday, that the evidence "is insufficient to bring them to criminal trial," explaining that he "ordered the release of those in pre-trial detention."

The Public Prosecutor said that he had interviewed the victim, a witness who was in the hotel wing, and 39 other witnesses saw the video that was circulated showing the alleged rape.

The prosecutor added that he also questioned the police, who are investigating the facts, and forensic experts.

The Me Too (#MeToo) movement has gained momentum since last year in Egypt, with many women reporting abusive sexual behavior.

Investigations by the United Nations indicate that most women in this conservative country have been victims of sexual violence, ranging from street harassment to groping and rape.
