'People will not be able to bear a lockdown and the financial pressure': Bdour

A member of the Board of Trustees at the National Center for Human Rights Ibrahim al-Bdour said the only thing that has been proven to be effective against the coronavirus epidemic is the vaccine and 'nothing else'.

He said His Majesty King Abdullah II called on the government to do everything they can to bring the country to a 'safe summer,' which means reopening sectors and life returning to normal. Bdour believes this will not happen because "we are facing a new wave in eight weeks according to the behavior of the virus."

In an interview with Roya's Nabd Albalad, he said that within four months, the vaccine proved that it prevents deaths, reducing admissions to ICUs. He noted that among those who received the Pfizer vaccine, only five percent got infected with COVID-19. He added that none of them needed breathing support and no deaths were recorded among them.

He said that after more than a year since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Jordan has tried "everything from a total lockdown to a curfew and a Friday lockdown...banning mosque prayers ... etc."

He explained that all these things "have not been practically and scientifically proven successful."

He added that the number of deaths is relatively high in comparison with other countries.

Bdour said it is the countries that vaccinated their people that returned to normal life. The Israeli Occupation vaccinated most of its people over the past four months and, have been reporting a small number of cases that has not exceeded 20 per day, most of which only had mild symptoms. Children have returned to schools and "their lives went back to normal."

Countries that did not vaccinate enough people only postponed the problem, he said.

Bdour said that the financial cost of acquiring the vaccine will be much less than the cost that we would have to pay economically, socially, and even politically.

"People will not be able to bear a lockdown and the financial pressure."

Bdour said the solution is not closures or lockdowns, but vaccinating everyone in order to limit further spreading of the virus and return to normalcy.
