Police had extensive intelligence on Capitol Attacks, but were told to hold back: report

According to US media Tuesday, Capitol Police had more intelligence on the deadly January Capitol Attacks than what was originally reported.

However, they were told not to use total force to suppress the attackers.

A 104-page report of harsh criticism prepared by Capitol Police Internal Inspector Michael Bolton concluded that the officers had not prepared or responded to the attack adequately, as reported by The New York Times and CNN.

Congress is due to hold a hearing on the report on Thursday.

The report stated that the Capitol Police had failed to prepare well despite receiving intelligence warnings that Trump supporters who believed that the November elections were fraudulent, posed a threat.

The report added that police were advised to refrain from using more aggressive crowd control tools such as stun grenades.

Three days before the unprecedented attack, Capitol Police received an intelligence assessment warning that Trump supporters were intent on stirring up violence and unrest.

The New York Times reported that the report emphasized that "unlike other protests after the election, Trump supporters were not necessarily targeting protesters opposing them as they had been in the past, but rather Congress itself."

Bolton wrote in his report that "more powerful and less lethal weapons", including sound bombs, "were not used that day due to command orders." He pointed out that some of the shields that the officers used were broken when using them because they were not stored at an appropriate temperature.
